API and Mashup

This week lecture was looking at API(application programming interface) and mashup.

I had never really know how they combined sites together to make them even better than before, for example notifyr.com or tuneage.tumblr.com both sites which are built off the back of existing services.
API’s enable functionality throughout the sites. This makes it easier for the audience to use the internet and access what they need and want with as little fuss as possible. This API also by combining helps people go to one site and find out multiple facts which they might have gone to tumblr. but instead they just went to tuneage.tumblr. and found exactly what they were looking for. API’s let you piggy back off other cool things, cheaper, faster and probably better than a single individual can do.

In class this week we looked at pipes and bringing all our sites together. Eg. Flickr, delicious, you tube, tumblr. all of these sites to then become filtered through so it is easier and more organised in one spot, than going to each individual site and seeing what has been happening. I found the site very self explanatory, though for some reason I could not work out why after I finished it, I could only find my tumblr sites, and on the side of my flickr. there was a question mark. It did not make any sense, I continue to fiddle with it and try and make it see until I got it not to have a question mark next to it, (no idea how I did that) but still I could not get the pipes to filter any more than just my tumblr. site which was starting to infuriate me.
At the very end of class, I decided to ask my tutor for help before I left as I knew if I left it, I would never get it to see my other sites.

With some moving around and re-typing suddenly the pipes started to filter all my sites! I was very happy and excited! I just wanted to skip around singing, but I bit my tongue and thank Max, for his wonderful help and left, so I could skip outside!
Coming home I went back onto the pipes site and continued to make it more filtered and now I am happy with how my sites are coming through my pipes, it is simple and easy =)

So happy with my pipes!
